I replied as below from my aliceadsl.fr account as copied below and the email was duly sent

In answer to your questions: Q1 No; Q3 No - my phone is Android.
Thank you again for your help. In fact because I have changed from Free to Orange, retaining only a rarely used phone with them, my problem was solved by changing the SMTP setting from free to orange.
I say solved, but will actually know if you receive my reply!!
Just when it was safe to get back into the water I received the following:

So near yet so far. Is therea next step I can take?
